There is no rule about what should or should not be part of a funeral. Opinions vary, customs vary, religious and ethnic groups also have different customs. How does Edwards and Dowdle deal with such a wide spectrum of opinion? The solution is that we maintain flexibility. We assist you in arranging for what YOU want no matter if it is traditional or non-traditional.

Two Terms You Should Understand:
  1. At need. When a funeral home is engaged to perform a service at the time of death it is called At-Need

  2. Pre arrangement. More and more people each year consider it a wise decision to prearrange their funeral. This process allows you or your family to set forth your wishes for how you would like your funeral plans to be carried out. It entails providing statistical and biographical information that is needed for death certificates and newspapers, as well as detailing the type of services to be held and any other special considerations you may have. Some people choose to prepay their own funeral as part of this. Many consider it a very thoughful act for their survivors, as death can sometimes occur unexpectedly or while travelling and having the plans completed in advance provides for well thought out decisions made without undue emotional stress or pressures of time.

A Word About Costs

When you inquire about funeral arrangements and costs, you must be offered a document that is called a General Price List. This is a requirement of both the Federal Trade Commission and the New York State Health Department. The General Price List is like a menu, and it contains the prices and descriptions of everything the funeral home routinely offers.

Grief Support

Many grieving individuals and families find that they need assistance in accepting the loss of a family member or friend. We are fortunate that their are numerous support groups in our area that grieving individuals can avail themselves of.

As these groups often change their location and membership, we suggest that you contact us at the funeral home for lists of local bereavement support groups that are available to assist you.
